Dialogo con embajadora de Venezuela

El pasado sábado 9 de marzo junto con la Dra. Maria Teresa Romero, nueva embajadora de Venezuela en Guatemala, discutimos sobre las causas de la caída de Venezuela al populismo y los sucesos actuales que son motivos de esperanza para el futuro del país. En un contexto nacional tenso en que las designaciones para puestos de representación del estado se toman de acuerdo a cuotas es actualmente la única embajadora designada por consenso. Es una profesional del periodismo de opinión e investigativo, con amplia experiencia comunicando en medios radiales y escritos.

Es gracias a esta experiencia que pudo compartir con nosotros algunas de las causas que llevaron a su país la complicada situación en la que se encuentra. Explicó cómo hay circunstancias que tornan a determinadas sociedades más susceptibles ante estrategias de gobierno populistas. En el caso venezolano encontramos una coyuntura particular en la que después de una era marcada por la movilidad social y el desarrollo económico impulsados por el petróleo. La población resintió mucho la caída en el precio del crudo y la publicación de varios escándalos de corrupción en el gobierno.

La caída del precio del petroleo reveló lo insegura que era la situación económica del país que había visto un aumento en la calidad de vida de un gran numero de sus habitantes. La rentabilidad del petroleo rápidamente lo había convertido en el motor del desarrollo local, desplazando a otras actividades como la agricultura que históricamente había jugado un papel importante.

En la medida que se asentaban las condiciones de estancamiento las condiciones para un regimen populista se empezaban a consolidar.
Las diferencias sociales y de oportunidades eran cada vez mas marcadas pues las posibilidades de asenso social disminuían, la clase media quedaba inerte y tampoco se lograban acciones que fijaran un norte desde las clases altas. Por lo que las libertades individuales empezaron a tomar un segundo plano ante el clamor por un cambio y el arribo de un salvador.

Todo esto fue aprovechado estratégicamente por Chavez que al identificar el momento oportuno empezó a intentar acciones para hacerse del poder que se concretizan en un primer término con un intento de golpe de estado. Quien mantiene su ahínco incluso al salir de prisión, postulándose y ganando las elecciones para presidente. El resto es la conocida historia de autoritarismo disfrazado y destrucción institucional llamada chavismo. Historia que hasta hoy día con el nuevo presidente interino Juan Guaidó parece acercarse a su fin.
