On Friday, June 7, we held a dialogue titled "What kind of country do we want?" regarding what you should consider to cast a responsible vote. Here you will find a summary of frequently asked questions for casting a responsible vote.
For a null vote to be binding, it must reach 50% plus one vote of all votes cast.
In that scenario, the election is repeated only once, but political parties are not obligated to present new candidates, so it is likely that the same candidates will run.
All public power must have checks and balances so that the person temporarily holding office does not abuse power. The President's checks and balances are the Congress and the Judicial Branch.
In these elections, you elect a President and also the Congress, which is why the importance of split-ticket voting is highlighted.
Congress, as a check and balance, can oversee the work of the executive branch, approve and modify the annual budget, among other things.
Consider each candidate's ability to respond to citizen demands such as security, more jobs, and better education.
Consider the candidates' track record.
Analyze whether the candidates have a viable plan.
Consider what values, principles, and ideology guide the candidate.
Candidates for deputies
Political parties' ideologies
Candidates for President
Government plans
We must reflect on where we come from, what has happened in the previous 4 years, and where we want to take our country with our vote.
We should not focus solely on the candidates' proposals, but also, and more importantly, on their capacity for execution.
We must build a republic, strengthen institutions, and also focus on important elections such as those for Congress. We need to reform the political system to have capable individuals who can promote reforms to the country's various laws and thus achieve positive structural changes.
Elections are a strong representation of democracy.
The socio-political context of each period causes citizen participation to increase or decrease. When there is a bad situation, participation increases because people seek change.
There needs to be more participation from young people; although we make up the majority of the population, this is not reflected in the electoral roll.
Citizen responsibility means knowing about the parties and candidates.
Voting is how the population approves or rejects the work of public officials in institutions.
