On Tuesday, November 28, 2023, members of the MCN went to the Plaza de los Derechos Humanos (Human Rights Plaza), in front of the Palace of Justice, to prepare a "Justice Kit" to deliver to the presiding magistrate of the Supreme Court of Justice to demand that the transition of power be respected and that the elected candidates take office, protecting the country's institutions.
The National Civic Movement is committed to the consolidation of a republican system that fulfills all the characteristics of a Republic, among which is the Rule of Law, whose compliance is indispensable and irreplaceable. Ensuring compliance with all republican principles, including freedom of expression and the transition of power, will safeguard the rights and freedoms of all Guatemalans.
The objective of this activity was to urge magistrates to fulfill their mandate to administer justice and preserve the independence of powers that characterize a Republic. We seek to highlight that it is extremely important for the Guatemalan justice system to have an impartial and independent Judicial Branch, complying with the separation of powers characteristic of a Republic.
Likewise, the due compliance with all the principles of the Republic and the adequate administration of justice ensures another essential republican principle: the transition of power. The new magistrates have the task of ensuring that the new authorities elected by citizens in August 2023 take office on January 14.
Justice must contain:
The Justice Kit was represented by the lady of justice from Greco-Roman mythology, Dike or Isis, whose figure represents moral strength in the acts of judicial systems.
Justice is represented by three elements:
- Scales: representing impartiality in decision-making
- Blindfold: symbolizing that objective decisions must prevail
- Sword: denoting the necessary firmness in the judicial decision-making process.
During the activity, we had the collaboration of a weaver, who carefully wove a blindfold with the word "justice" in front of the Palace of Justice.
Likewise, we had the participation of a sharpener who contributed so that when the sword of justice was delivered, it was well-sharpened.
Finally, we were accompanied by a young woman who helped ensure that the contents of the scales were well-calibrated, and who also represented the lady of justice along with the other elements mentioned.
Participation is essential to keep the Republic alive.
Only compliance with all republican principles can ensure that all citizens' rights and freedoms are protected. The destruction of the Republic's principles is detrimental to all citizens, since only those who seek particular gain for themselves will benefit from this.
For this reason, it is important to ensure transparency in the acts of public entities and to demand that elected candidates assume power on January 14 at 2:00 PM, as well as to respect the division of powers that protects the well-being of the Guatemalan Republic and all citizens.
Participation is the foundation of the republic.
In the National Civic Movement, we have worked to demonstrate, report, and monitor all actions of public power that threaten our rights and freedoms, and that could destroy the Republic. Now, we are opening the opportunity for all citizens to be aware of everything that has happened in the transition process and to understand why it is important.
A oversight tool: "From Election to Transition"
For this reason, the National Civic Movement will present a new tool that the public can find on the official MCN website: mcn.org.gt.
This tool will be used to observe and monitor all actions of public power from the beginning of the electoral process and the transition process to date. This will be continuously updated to provide accurate information to all citizens. It will also provide citizens with an interactive timeline that offers a comprehensive overview of the events and legal actions that have taken place during the electoral process.
Only the brave are capable of fighting for the rights of all citizens equally.
The protection of the Republic transcends personal tastes, ideologies, and preferences. For this reason, we must fight for compliance with the transition laws and for the elected candidates to take office on January 14.
