After holding a virtual meeting with President Alejandro Giammattei, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris had a virtual meeting with various Guatemalan civil society organizations.
On April 27, 2021, Jose Echeverría, Executive President of the National Civic Movement participated in a virtual roundtable organized by the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala to converse with Vice President Kamala Harris.
During the conversation with Vice President Kamala Harris, several important points were addressed to understand the root causes of migration. At the same time, solutions were sought to improve governance, the rule of law, and reduce poverty and corruption.
For the National Civic Movement, it is imperative to focus on:
- First, strengthening the Rule of Law. Guaranteeing judicial independence and improving investigative and prosecutorial capabilities. For this, strengthening justice institutions and developing their capacities is a priority.
- Second, improving democratic quality through a reform of the political system so that it responds to citizen demands and moves away from organized crime influences.
- Third, fostering economic opportunities to create jobs. Inclusive development requires opportunities for Guatemalans so that migration is not seen as the only option. Reaffirming that work must be done in conjunction with the private sector to create sustainable and inclusive long-term economic opportunities.
